In your opinion, why should prenatal testing be routine for all pregnant women? Please be very specific and provide examples.
I believe that some prenatal testing should be required. For example, the screening for anemia, STD’s and blood pressure elevations. These tests can detect early problems with the mother and can be managed or corrected early in pregnancy to help insure a healthy baby and mother.
However, some prenatal test should be optional. For example, an Amniocentesis, in which a needle is inserted into the mother abdomen penetrating the amniotic sac and amniotic fluid is withdrawn from the womb for testing of genetic defects such as Down’s Syndrome. There is a 1 in 400 chance of miscarriage if this test is performed
Far to often doctors recommend risky tests based on data without informing the patient of the potential risks.

ReplyDeleteI do agree that prenatal testing should be required for all expecting mother's. High blood pressure, anemia, diabetes and STD's can harm the baby and the mother so it is very important to get tested for that. Also having a STD for a long amount of time can make the mother sterile. I agree with you about the amniocentesis test that is a very dangerous test, but is beneficial to some parents because if there baby has problems then they might want to terminate the pregnancy. Me being pregnant I have not even thought about that test. Very interesting points Zipporah.
Prenatal testing is a must when it comes to prevention and care for the newborn. The tests you mentioned are basic tests and should be provided worldwide by local government’s health clinics and hospitals to prevent any complications with the mother or the baby. Prenatal care is so important for the mother and baby and ensures a healthier future for both.
